Arshad Ahmed quoted in "Healthcare at Home" by The Deal

In this article entitled "Healthcare at Home", journalists Sara Behunek and David Holley cite a recent Scientia Advisors review showing that the global home health market, comprised of both services and equipment, is expected to grow to $200 billion in 2010-a 10% increase over 2007. The growth, as outlined in the Scientia Advisors' review, is fueled by the increasing movement of health care from hospitals to point-of-care facilities such as emergency rooms, outpatient clinics, rapid clinics, and patients' home.
The trend will bring significant health care savings, in part by reducing post-hospital Medicare spending, the authors report.
Quoting Scientia Advisors Founding Partner Arshad Ahmed, they write that, with $79b in global sales, home health agencies account for the largest home health subsector - but that the subsector is highly fragmented. Among 10,000 agencies in the US, two top operators (Gentiva Healtyh Services Inc. and Baton Rouge, La-based Amedysis, Inc.) are gaining ground but control only 7 per cent of the market.
The article points out that while agencies comprise the largest home health sub-segment, remote monitoring, used mainly to help manage chronic diseases of patients at home, is the fastest growing-evidenced in part by 2009 alliances between GE Healthcare and Intel Corp, and several recent acquisitions by Royal Philips Electronics NV.
