New Questions Emerge in Stratified (Personalized) Medicine

There has been a lot of activity of late in the area of Stratified Medicine (SM)[1]. Almost every major Pharma and Biotech company has initiatives in this area.  Recently, there have been high profile launches of innovative therapies such as Pfizer’s lung cancer drug called Xalkori and Roche’s Zelboraf for melanoma. In addition, there are approximately forty SM products in late stage registration trials that will enter the market in the near term. However, behind all this activity, there have been subtle changes in how some Pharma/Biotech companies are viewing SM and adapting to the changes resulting from it. The mindset within industry circles is quickly switching from “SM will shrink my market and is a threat to my business” to “SM is a strategic asset for us to gain competitive advantage.” The industry is moving from ad-hoc and decentralized approaches of SM to coordinated, centralized and process-driven approaches in planning and operational activities in SM across various geographies.

Medtech Companies, Are You Ready to Play the Non-BRIC Emerging Economies?

Early last week I moderated a panel on medical technology devices in emerging markets organized by the MIT Enterprise Forum. The panel featured Bill Rodriguez, CEO of Daktari Diagnostics and Una Ryan, CEO of Diagnostics for All.

The panel was enlightening, and confirmed our view that emerging and developing markets are ready for significant growth across a wide array of medtech markets. While there has been a lot of attention and focus on China, India and other BRIC economies, we continue to believe that other lesser developed markets, particularly in Africa, present profitable opportunities that have hitherto been neglected by medtech incumbents. However, a new breed of companies is increasingly addressing the compelling medical needs of these emerging economies. Daktari Diagnostics and Diagnostics for All are prime examples of such new players.

The Healthcare Battle for a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) Control Point Begins

Related to: Healthcare Trends

McKesson launches Interqual with Molecular Diagnostics criteria and acquires US Oncology. GE Healthcare launches Qualibria Clinical Knowledge Platform. Medco acquires DNA Direct.

What do these announcements have in common? They are a few examples of strategic moves by companies to gain access to an emerging control point in healthcare: clinical decision support system (CDSS).

What is CDSS?

Imagine a world where a physician who prescribes a drug through the electronic medical record (EMR) is immediately alerted that the patient cannot be given a certain medication due to a drug-drug interaction that may result in an adverse event. The system also notifies the physician of results from various diagnostic tests demonstrating that the drug will not be efficacious. The physician is provided with a recommended alternative therapeutic and provided an option to consult with an in-network expert with which to confer. Such an interactive system with supporting algorithms, databases and data interfaces, along with any other service and support mechanism which are designed to assist physicians and other health professionals with decision making tasks, is what we are calling CDSS. Dr. Robert Hayward of the Centre for Health Evidence has proposed the following working definition: “Clinical decision support systems link health observations with health knowledge to influence health choices by clinicians for improved health care“.

Why could CDSS grow to be a control point in healthcare?
