Pharma/diagnostics partnerships becoming a "must have," Harry Glorikian of Scientia Advisors tells Diagnostics Testing and Technology Report
January 2011 IssueWith the US Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency encouraging the use of companion diagnostics both in the drug approval process and in the prescribing of drugs, partnerships between pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies "will become 'a must have,' not a 'nice-to-have,'" Scientia Advisors Managing Partner Harry Glorikian told Diagnostics Testing and Technology Report. In a January 2011 article entitled "Diagnostic-Pharmaceutical Parnerships Increasing, Companies Working Together to Develop Companion Products", Glorikian and other experts describe how relationships between pharma and diagnostics companies are changing as, increasingly, diagnostic tests influence market approval of drugs and drug pricing. Whereas in the past, research and development determined when diagnostics were most appropriately paired with drugs, "it is now becoming a brand management issue," Glorikian told the Report. "If you set the biomarker low most people get through the system, but if you set it high, is the trial big enough? It is not a science decision; it's a marketing decision. It affects market size and penetration."
