Topic

Personalized Medicine and Already Approved Drugs: The Plavix Case Study and What You Don't Know Can Hurt You
Plavix (clopidogrel) had sales of $9.5 billion in 2009, making it one of the biggest blockbusters in the world. The recent FDA decision to add genetic polymorphism information to the label has the potential to dramatically affect sales of a drug that is the cornerstone of two leading worldwide pharmaceutical developers. Plavix provides a case study of how stakeholders other than the original drug developer can affect the future sales of leading drugs. The session will also highlight how personalized medicine can affect small molecule drugs that have traditionally not been considered the purview of personalized medicine.

Learning Objectives

  • Offer understanding of how personalized medicine is affecting drugs on the market.
  • Describe how competitors/stakeholders can impact sector leading drugs using personalized medicine.
  • Describe strategies to ensure that drug developers are not blindsided by new information.

Speakers

  • Amit Agarwal - Partner, Scientia Advisors - Track Leader
  • Gabriela Lavezzri - Senior Manager Extramural R&D, Medco Research Intitute
  • Cecilia Schott - Business Development Personalized Healthcare, AstraZeneca, Plc
